The Luxury Alpinist: How to Climb Mount Kenya in Comfort
Climbing Africa’s second-highest peak is often associated with hardship—cold bunkhouses and instant noodles. But for the discerning traveler, there is a better way to summit. Here is our guide to conquering “Kirinyaga” without compromising on elegance.
1. Choose the Right Route (The Scenic Secret) Most climbers take the Sirimon route for speed. We recommend the Chogoria Route. It is arguably the most scenic, passing through mint-scented heather zones and dramatic gorges. It takes longer, which is the ultimate luxury: time to acclimatize.
2. The “Glamping” Hack Forget sleeping bags on the floor. Our expeditions utilize private mobile camps. Think walk-in tents with thermal insulation, proper cots with linens, and a private mess tent. The hack here is thermal regulation—sleeping comfortably means you recover faster for the next day’s ascent.
3. The Helicopter Assist Not ready for the full descent? The ultimate hack is the “Heli-Down”. After reaching Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise, skip the knee-straining hike back. A helicopter meets you at the tarn for a champagne breakfast and a 20-minute flight back to Nanyuki.
